Students with learning disabilities and sensory challenges face significant obstacles in traditional classroom settings—barriers that can impact not only their education but also their emotional well-being. In this presentation, we will explore how thoughtful design choices—such as sensory-friendly classrooms and strategic material selection—can create spaces that foster better learning environments, improve student behavior, and enhance the teaching experience. We will also highlight key federal mandates that guide these efforts, ensuring schools align with best practices and compliance requirements. By rethinking classroom design, schools have the power to make a lasting difference. We will share an inspiring success story from Mead School District outside of Spokane, Washington, where thinking differently and working on innovative collaboration transformed a classroom into a space that truly supports students’ unique needs. This session will provide practical insights for facility and operations managers on how they can play a vital role in shaping environments that not only benefit students but also improve teacher satisfaction.
